Each garden starts with two normal Chao eggs. You can also buy eggs in the Black Market. You can hatch each egg 3 ways. First, you can shake it, this is the most common and is probably the best way. To do this, pick up the egg and hold B, then push the joy-stick to the side. Second, you can throw it, this is the mean way to do it because the Chao will come out hurt, and could change the baby's personality to a bad one. And finally, waiting. This will take a little while. This really has no affect on the Chao's personality. Chao's moods are random, accept for Chao obtained via breeding, those Chao usually get a mood based from their parents.

Many people breed Chao to raise grade levels or to make a cool looking Chao. Chao breed two ways, either by it being mating season (about two or more years old), or by being given a Heart Fruit (which it appears that giving Chao Heart Fruit shortens its life span). When your Chao has a ring of flowers around it, it is trying to mate. Note that Chaos Chao and Character Chao can't mate. Now, if a Black Chao mates with a Shiny White, the possibilities are:

• A Black Chao
• A White Chao
• A Shiny Black Chao
• A Shiny White Chao
• A Black Two Tone Chao
• A Shiny White Two Tone Chao

"Two Tone Chao" are Chao with highlights (a Normal Chao is blue with yellow markings, making it a Two Tone Chao).
